Actually you can visit the beauty and authenticity of Andalucia the whole year through. If you like lots of sun and you would like to enjoy the fiestas its better to come during the summertime. Those who want to avoid the heat will prefer spring and autumn. And now some suggestions for visits and sightseeing.
Birds and butterflies in the Subbetica National park
The Subbetica has a gorgeous and rough landscape.
One of the biggiest colonies of griffon vultures in the whole of Southern Spain is nesting here, as well as more than seventy other birds species. Amongst them the Bonelli-eagle, peregrine falcon, black kite, ring blackbird, rock thrush and the alpine swallow can be spotted here.
In Zuheros you van visit some spectacular caves with bats (Las Cuevas de las Murciélagos), carved and eroded into the limestone landscape. Be impressed by stalagtites, stalagmites and other rock formations. And do not forget the charming village itself with its small streets decorated with flowerpots and the terrace near the church which offers fantastic panoramic views while you enjoy your tapas.
Spanish fiestas in Andalucia
Spain is known everywhere for its fiestas. In fact during summer it feels like not one weekend passes without an invitation for a fiesta somewhere ! Our own fiesta in Los Rios around May 15th goes on for two nights. A Spanish group dances beautifully in the town centre while the whole community is eating paella near the banks of the river. It offers a unique opportunity to experience a local fiesta in the Spanish countryside.
The best time to visit the fiestas is summer.
Flamenco dancing
Apart from the local fiestas the best place to enjoy flamenco dancing is the gipsy quarter in Granada. You will find shows everywhere in the neighbourhood.
The performances are being held in the cellars of the Sacramento area and ususally begin around 11 pm. Often there is a drink included in the ticket price.
